Sharing the Goodness

Every day at 4 p.m., Peter C. visits Piedmont Hills High School for a hot meal served by Loaves & Fishes. After 40 years of working at the post office, it’s a new routine, and one that helps him stay nourished while paying for the single room he rents.

Soon after his first visit to our serving site, Peter began picking up extra meals to share with a neighbor who is unable to cook for herself and a couple who lost their home and are now living on the street. The hot prepared meals are a help and a comfort for the people he serves.

An older adult living on a fixed income, Peter relies on the daily meal program for nourishment and a way to stay connected to his community. “The meals are good—I like them all, especially the beef,” he said. “It helps me, but it also helps the people I share with. Some can’t cook or don’t have access to a kitchen. I tell them I’ll see them around 4 so the food is still warm.”

“I’m so happy I made the connection [to Loaves & Fishes] and grateful to the people who make this work possible. It’s a good resource for people in need,” Peter said.

Picking up his meal and delivering meals to those who wait for him each afternoon has given him a renewed sense of purpose. “I’m free as a bird,” he says with a smile. “I want to use the time I have to share meals with people who need them.”
