The New ABCs

For the youngest child, back-to-school season is all about learning the ABCs.

But with 42% of our region’s children at risk of food insecurity, we are starting the school year by embracing a new meaning for the ABCs—one that describes our approach to helping children thrive: Access. Belonging. Consistency.

A is for Access. Over the past year, Loaves & Fishes has expanded its Community Meal program, including the addition of new locations at elementary schools in the Alum Rock School District. Through our Closer to Home initiative, we are bringing meals to places families already know and visit, and coordinating distribution with school dismissal schedules. Families receive our freshly made meals ready to heat for dinner, along with a bag of fresh produce and any available hygiene kits. 

At sites where families or individuals may not have access to a kitchen, meals are served hot and ready to eat. Our goal is to make our meals as accessible as possible to those who need them most.   

B is for Belonging. Sharing a meal is about more than the food. It is an opportunity for us to make families feel welcomed, valued, and supported, which also reduces barriers to nutrition. At every meal distribution site, families are welcomed as they would be to a family dinner and served with dignity and kindness. They deserve good food and belong at our table.

C is for Consistency. Families need to know that support will be there when they need it. Our regularly scheduled meal distributions, held at elementary schools, high schools, community colleges, and other locations across the valley Monday through Friday make it easy for families to plan. No matter what else is  happening in their lives, parents know where and when they can get meals for their children.    

And with more meal distribution locations planned in the coming year, more families will be able to count on consistent nutrition provided by Loaves & Fishes.

These ABCs are fundamental, because when children and families have access to nutritious meals, a sense of belonging, and consistent support, children are better prepared to show up, learn, and thrive throughout the school year and beyond.
