Our Mission

Founded in 1980, Loaves & Fishes began with a simple meal of bread and fish for 11 adults and 15 children.

The mission of Loaves & Fishes is to provide hot nutritious meals that are prepared, delivered and served to low-income families, disadvantaged individuals with a special concern for children, families, seniors, veterans, students, disabled, and the homeless.

All are welcomed, no questions asked.

Over the past four years, Loaves & Fishes has steadily increased and streamlined its services to support the growing number of local residents needing hot meals and support services – including on major holidays. We now partner with 30 nonprofits to provide meals at two low-income senior retirement center, community centers, schools and afterschool programs.

Loaves & Fishes has embraced an extended partnership  model. We operate two centralized kitchens in Morgan Hill at the cost of $1 rent per year plus utilities. Our fleet of trucks including two specialized hot/cold temperature controlled delivery trucks allow us to deliver an average of 12,000 meals per week across the Bay Area in a sixty mile radius from Gilroy to Palo Alto.

The extended delivery service model has enable Loaves & Fishes to:

  • Increase the number of meals we serve by 325%

  • Decrease the cost of a meal served by 62%

  • Increase the number of children we serve from 5,229 annually to 92,115 children served annually.

This may sound impressive but there is a lot more to be done. The booming local economy has its consequences. In our region apartment rents average more than $2,850 per month. It takes an annual income of more than $125,000 for a family to pay their bills and put food on the table.

The majority of the people we serve earn less than $20,000 per year. Therefore many of them have no other choice but to work multiple jobs or share homes with multiple families. Few have time or resources to even prepare food let alone purchase ingredients. High cost of living, underemployment and unemployment are driving the need.

We need your help, please:

  1. Donate financially to help us serve free nutritious meals

  2. Become an automatic monthly donor

  3. Volunteer your time at a meal service or our grocery bag program

  4. Donate a vehicle or corporate stocks

  5. Consider bequeathing Loaves & Fishes through planned or legacy gifts.

Our meal programs fulfill the immediate nutritional needs of 100% of our participants. They also increase their food security and enables them to use their limited financial resources to pay for other basic needs, such as rent, utilities, transportation, and healthcare.
