Carlos was born in Peru and lived in Mexico for 5 years. He migrated to the United States 23 years ago. Both Carlos’ parents and sister have passed away, and his only brother lives out of state in Texas.
Now 62 years old, for the last 5 years, Carlos has been homeless, with little hope for any possible housing in the high-cost Bay Area. He has been coming to Loaves & Fishes since we started serving hot nutritious meals at Eastside Neighborhood Center.
Without Loaves & Fishes, Carlos says, for meals he survives like a stray animal, by the nearby apartments and home residents. He has built a shelter under a tree made out of cardboard boxes, shopping carts, and stacks of empty containers. With no available shelter beds and a lack of affordable housing, it is all he has.
Carlos is very grateful for the services that Loaves & Fishes is able to provide. “I am not treated like an animal... between the hours of 4:30 pm – 5:30 pm the door is always welcome for me here,” says Carlos. “I thank the Lord for each and every one of the volunteers that help.”
Will you please help us feed people like Carlos in our community - children, families, seniors, students, veterans, and the homeless - who come to Loaves and Fishes every day? For the vast majority of our guests, their meal with us will be their only meal for the day.
