Volunteer Appreciation BBQ Luncheon

Thank you to all our wonderful volunteers! Loaves & Fishes extends our appreciation to those who attended Saturday’s Volunteer BBQ Luncheon. We are pleased that everyone enjoyed the event.

The compassion that each of our volunteer show to the people we serve is an inspiration for us all. Loaves & Fishes commends each of our volunteers. We noticed how you treat everyone with respect and kindness, no matter what the situation is. We all know how stressful it can be for the people who find themselves in need of the services we provide, and your words and actions go a long way toward helping them keep their dignity. Your kindness is truly appreciated.

Thank you for all that you do!

Isaac's Stone Soup Challenge!

We’d like to introduce you to our friend Isaac. At only 9 years old, Isaac has always wanted to help people. He started to save up his allowance and to even collect some of his friends' allowance as well!

Recently, Isaac and his grandma, Theresa came to one of Loaves & Fishes Family Kitchen meal service sites. Isaac worked hard during the meal, serving our homeless and hungry guests and never failed to share an angelic smile with every dining guest he met.

Isaac not only volunteered to help and serve our hungry community that day; he also donated his long-saved money - $81 - to Loaves & Fishes!

We are so touched by Isaac's big heart and kindness for others.  And his generosity gave us an idea. When we shared it with Isaac and his grandmother, Isaac was “all in!”.

Isaac would like to challenge YOU to join Isaac’s Stone Soup Challenge! Can you save $81 to add to our pot of Stone Soup? Isaac is inviting Loaves & Fishes donors and volunteers to help raise money towards his new goal of $81,000!  That’s 33,000 meals! (WOW!)

For every dollar donated during Hunger Awareness Month, Sobrato Family Foundation will double your gift!

Help us make Isaac’s Stone Soup Challenge a reality - 33,000 meals to feed our homeless and hungry neighbors across our community!

Challenge your friends and family too and tag them with #IsaacStoneSoupChallenge @LoavesFishesSJ on Facebook and Twitter!

If we all contribute something to the pot of Stone Soup, we will all feast.

Our doors are always open for Carlos

Carlos was born in Peru and lived in Mexico for 5 years. He migrated to the United States 23 years ago. Both Carlos’ parents and sister have passed away, and his only brother lives out of state in Texas.

Now 62 years old, for the last 5 years, Carlos has been homeless, with little hope for any possible housing in the high-cost Bay Area. He has been coming to Loaves & Fishes since we started serving hot nutritious meals at Eastside Neighborhood Center.

Without Loaves & Fishes, Carlos says, for meals he survives like a stray animal, by the nearby apartments and home residents. He has built a shelter under a tree made out of cardboard boxes, shopping carts, and stacks of empty containers. With no available shelter beds and a lack of affordable housing, it is all he has.

Carlos is very grateful for the services that Loaves & Fishes is able to provide. “I am not treated like an animal... between the hours of 4:30 pm – 5:30 pm the door is always welcome for me here,” says Carlos. “I thank the Lord for each and every one of the volunteers that help.”

Will you please help us feed people like Carlos in our community - children, families, seniors, students, veterans, and the homeless - who come to Loaves and Fishes every day?  For the vast majority of our guests, their meal with us will be their only meal for the day.

September is Hunger Awareness Month. You can take action by giving, volunteering, and advocating to raise awareness about hunger in the Bay Area.
