August is Kids Eat Right Month - Kid Friendly Tasks for the Kitchen

With childhood obesity on the rise, making sure kids eat right and get plenty of exercise is vital.

Loaves & Fishes is committed to nutritionally balanced meals, and is one of the few soup kitchens in Northern California that emphasize fresh fruits and vegetables, along with healthy protein items rather than canned or processed foods that tend to be high in sugar and/or sodium. Low-salt and low-sugar diets are essential for preventing obesity and diabetes.

Hunger and nutrition have severe and long-lasting consequences. Hungry children have trouble focusing at school, thus jeopardizing their ability to do well in their studies and raise their standard of living in the future. We know that education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty. This is nearly impossible if people are forced to give up or delay their education so they can eat. Poor nutrition leads to obesity (especially in children) and increases the risk of childhood diabetes and heart disease. Malnutrition in a pregnant woman can seriously affect her child’s health. Through our nutritious prepared meals, Loaves & Fishes Family Kitchen plays a vital role in helping to keep people of all ages healthy and productive.

At Loaves & Fishes we wanted to share some tips you can use at home to encourage your children to eat right. August, which is Kids Eat Right Month, is a great time for families to focus on the importance of healthful eating and active lifestyles. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is encouraging families to take the following steps:
